Thirty-five years as a justifiable rock musician allows Bruce Springsteen an opinion on the state of over-the-air radio, and he takes it--and takes the medium to the woodshed on the ruthless "Radio Nowhere." The opening smash sets the tone, with the ageless Boss wondering, "Is there anybody out there?" before imploring, "I just want to hear some rhythm." Then, with E Street Band in tow, Springsteen goes on to retrace every step between here and
Greetings from Asbury Park, hand-delivering more could-be, would-be hits than anything he's done since
Born in the USA. Credit producer Brendan O'Brien for the wall of sound that backs "Girls in Their Summer Clothes," which sets the atmosphere for one of the great vocal performances by Springsteen, who plays the misfit "in the cool of the evening light" watching the girls "pass me by." With piano, glockenspiel, and infinite guitars, the rocker "I'll Work for Your Love" recalls
The River, with Springsteen even settling for blue-collar hero in matters of the heart. "Livin' in the Future" could be an out-take from
Darkness on the Edge of Town, with shades of Election Day blasting away with the boastful sax of Clarence Clemons and Little Steven's relentless backing vocals. There's even a hint of
Nebraska on "Terry's Song," an earnest (and mostly solo) accolade with Springsteen acknowledging the death of a friend: "When they built you, brother/They broke the mold." The hidden track closes this unforeseen comeback, and for 48 minutes the nearly 60-year-old Bruce Springsteen sounds 35 again.

This is a solid CD release titled "Magic" by the legendary rocker Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen in 2007,5 years since last release with The E - Street Band, "The Rising" & 2 years since his solo effort "Devils & Dust). Both of these albums ["The Rising","Devils & Dust" & "Magic"] are produced by the legendary Brendan O'Brien. The Tracks : 1."Radio Nowhere" - a surprising,up tempo & eerie but good opening track, let you know "The Boss" is in a different mood but signaling that he has arrived (rated 4 stars).
2."You'll Be Comin' Down" - an excellent second track (rated 5 stars).
3."Livin' In The Future" - ordinary song (rated 3 stars).
4."Your Own Worst Enemy" - a weak song (rated 2 stars).
5."Gypsy Biker" - a good pacy song (rated 4 stars).
6."Girls In Their Summer Clothes" - a good laid back track (rated 3 stars).
7."I'll Work For Your Love" - a great love melodic song & very persuasive lyrics "The pages of Revelation lie open in your empty eyes of blue;I watch you slip that comb through your hair, and this I promise you : I'll work for your love, dear;I'll work for your love; What others may want for free,I'll work for your love" (rated 5 stars).
8."Magic" - a good title track (rated 3 stars).
9."Last To Die" - an ok song (rated 3 stars).
10."Long Walk Home" - my favourite song from this album,a beautiful number, sweet melody & great lyrics to boot "In town I passed Sal's grocery; The barbershop on South Street;I looked into their faces; They were all rank strangers to me;The veterans' hall high up on the hill;Stood silent and alone; The diner was shuttered and boarded; With a sign that just said "gone" (rated 5 stars).Hence the title of my review.
11."Devil's Arcade" - a dark ok song (rated 3 stars).
Overall rating comes to a well deserved 4 stars,a highly recommended listening by this legendary prolific multi-grammy singer-songwriter,Bruce Springsteen. |

I became a Bruce fan the first time I heard Darkness On The Edge Of Town, I thought his earlier work was a ham-fisted attempt to appropriate Dylan. Nebraska and
The River are also great masterworks but with Born In The USA Bruce started to become too comercial for my esoteric tastes, yeah I'm a "music snob" I only have two types of music in my collection-essential and absolutely essential. The critics keep giving Bruce 4-5 stars on all his recent stuff but seriously I find it lacks inspiration, yeah the Bruce signature sound is there but I've heard it all before.
If you can listen to The River and then listen to Magic and say he hasn't lost anything you need to check your depthometer for music listening.
Buy Chuck Prophet's Soap and Water , Dan Auerbach's Keep It Hid or Tom Petty's Mojo if you want some great inspired R&R that keeps the tradition going. |
| A Good Album, but Not Quite The Rising | 2010-06-20 | 4 / 5 |

Coming five years after "The Rising," Springsteen and the E Street Band's most recent effort, "Magic," is well worth the listen. Though it doesn't measure up to the triumph of their previous album, there are quite a few good songs, and the whole thematically holds together well.
My favorite track is, without a doubt, "Long Walk Home," which combines nostalgia for home with a recognition of the ways America has sometimes gone wrong, and the knowledge that it sometimes takes a long, hard time to get back to something you've lost.
Other excellent songs on the album are "Radio Nowhere," "You'll Be Comin' Down," and the title track, "Magic". There's only one song I habitually skip, "Gypsy Biker." The rest are all good listening.
If you like Springsteen's recent work, you'll like "Magic." |
| Not a Springsteen Fan | 2010-06-15 | 4 / 5 |

I know I am in the minority when I say I am not a Springsteen fan. I like a few things he has recorded over the years, but his voice always left me pretty cold.
I finally listened to "Magic" today - Bruce has never sounded better. Yes, production values leave something to be desired, but I could not ask more from him - I rated 4 stars. Would have been a 5+ with a better production. I agree - remaster it |
| Despite Springsteen's age, this album shows he still has it. | 2010-05-03 | 5 / 5 |

| Magic is a great album, and thus it is one of my favorite Springsteen albums. Some of my favorite songs from this album are Radio Nowhere, You'll Be Comin' Down, Livin' In The Future, Your Own Worst Enemy, and Girls In Their Summer Clothes. Despite Springsteen being 58 years old when this album was released, Magic turned out to be a great album in the eyes of myself and many others - showing Springsteen still had it (and still does.) If you're a fan of "The Boss", I recommend buying this album if you haven't done so already. |
