There's nothing funny about being a vegan, unless you're humorist Ben Shaberman. Shaberman explores the lighter side of one of the world's fastest growing life choices: living meat-free. From social absurdities to his own foibles, Shaberman's reflections will put a smile on the lips of vegans and omnivores alike. Ben Shaberman's essays have appeared in the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Vegetarian Times, VegNews, and a variety of other publications. His commentaries have also been carried by NPR's Morning Edition, as well as NPR in Baltimore and Des Moines. He earned a master's degree in poetry from Johns Hopkins University, and is a member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

| this book has very little vegan content. most of the monologues are about things non-related to veganism. |

As much as I appreciate the awareness being raised about animal cruelty, I find myself going into overwhelm at times. Whether you're a vegan or not, The Vegan Monologues is a great comic relief. The first half consists of short essays of a cool guy who happens to be vegan, the second half are other essays about life in general on planet earth. I found myself laughing out loud at Ben's self-deprecating humor and creative writing style.
I love the variety and short chapters. It's a book you can pick up when you have an extra five minutes and amuse yourself in between meetings or while waiting for your lunch date to show up. It's a good balance of poking fun (in an intelligent way) at himself as well as society in general. |

As a newly minted vegan, I'm always looking for books, movies - any tool I can use to keep myself motivated and 'on the wagon', so to speak.
After reading the stellar reviews of "The Vegan Monologues", I thought that this would be such a weapon, but I was mistaken.
Shaberman really doesn't bring any new revelations or insights to the vegan lifestyle.
His essays are remarkably short, and the volume strikingly thin.
A larger than usual font and wider margins add to the padding.
He seems to just barely skim the surface of what it takes to be a vegan, instead, going for thin laughs and perhaps the occasional smirk.
With the advent of blogging and the popularity of healthy lifestyles, there are better articles, blog entries and essays to be had than Shabereman's volume.
Considering the size of the essays, the superficial treatment of the lifestyle, the poor attempt at humor and the cost of this thin little book, I would recommend that you pass.

| Loved this book... really! Bought four extra copies for Christmas presents for non-vegan friends. The book is funny at times, serious at others, and the stories will make you smile. It's a short, easy read (and a great gift for those you are trying to gently nudge into a kinder lifestyle). |

| I, too, bought this book on impulse. has this little trick - when you're about to purchase a book, a message pops up that says "Spend a little more and get free shipping." Who could resist...so I purchased this book. What a pleasant surprise and what a treat to read! I say it's like mind candy because I just finished studying for a designation that took me 4 years to get. This was the first book I picked up after passing my last exam. It was like getting that dessert your mother dangled over your head until you finished your meal....(with a little soy whipped cream.) |
